Newsletter – October 2012

Membership, Assessment and New Trainings
The summer has inevitably been a quiet period, but we have continued to receive applications from a wide variety of talented and experienced professionals.  We now have members, and potential members, in many different parts of the UK, at many levels of expertise and experience. Several of them have expressed an interest in becoming active members of our executive and there will be more news on this in our next newsletter. We are undertaking a number of new initiatives: one of the most important is the  development of  more transparent protocols for assessing the quality and progress of our students. This will become increasingly necessary with the growth of a variety of incremental modules, brief courses and in-house trainings that can lead to an APPCIOS accreditation. Several such courses are in the early stages of development and negotiation and our Accreditation Committee is evolving guidelines so that these can be given APPCIOS approval.

The APPCIOS Blogsites
Our use of the community blogsite has lapsed a little, over the summer. Now that we are all back at work, we will return to the discipline of regular communication, and we hope for a lively response.  As an association which is about self-reflective organisational work, we are committed to developing high quality support which we can offer our members through various long-distance media.  We are looking at ways of facilitating easier use of our members’ blogsite, and have been receiving technical advice about creating sites for clinical discussions, with appropriate safeguards to protect confidentiality.   We also aim to set up a series of long-distance Skype conference discussion groups that members can undertake as part of their CPD.

Workshops and Conferences
We are planning to hold a small programme of conferences, workshops and presentations over the course of the next year.  These will focus on supporting the establishment of accredited APPCIOS courses, modules and in-house trainings within organisations. The small workshops will be made available to members in different parts of the country, and the larger events in London and the Midlands.  There will be more information in our next newsletter.  As always, please contact us if you would like to know more about what is happening – or post a contribution on our blogsite.

Newsletter – July 2012

On Saturday June 23rd we held our Launch Event. We were delighted with the response: we had eighty guests – as many as the venue could hold. It was a day of hard work and intense discussions, and was hugely helpful to our thinking. It left us more than ever determined to build new opportunities for providing psychodynamic thinking around vulnerable clients at a time when traditional routes to psychodynamic treatment are increasingly threatened by cuts in government expenditure.

A number of questions were asked about APPCIOS, our structure, our plans and our approach. We have put responses to some of these up on our Website in the form of FAQs. Please take a look at them on appcios.com if you would like further information about us.

THE APPCIOS COMMUNITY FORUM

Many new people have joined the APPCIOS community forum blog site. It is now hosting energetic conversations about how guests experienced the Launch Event: we do hope that, whether or not you were able to attend, you will join the blog site and become involved in future discussions. If you have not already been invited onto the blog site, or if your invitation has lapsed, please email us or phone us, and we will provide you with a new invitation and instructions on how to access the site.

NEW TRAININGS

Our first bespoke in-house training is starting in September: this is being established within a small private fostering agency, Greater London Fostering, which offers placements to around ninety looked after children. We are adding theory seminars and additional facilitated dynamics meetings to the programme of consultation and work discussion groups that has existed there for some time. We hope that we can achieve clinical accreditation for several of the staff there within a relatively brief timescale. Once they have been accredited, they will join with senior APPCIOS clinicians in training their junior staff.

In the aftermath of the Launch Event, we are also negotiating further bespoke trainings with other social care providers in the private sector. These too are being developed from ongoing consultation to staff groups, or from role consultancy or clinical supervision that has already been provided to the senior managers.

We hope that APPCIOS members will start to build up a number of such bespoke in-house trainings. We’d be interested to think with anyone who is already providing consultation or supervision to a staff group about the possibility of growing their present input into a full or partial APPCIOS trainings.

Please note that we now have a new email address: info@appcios.com.In future we will be sending out our newsletters through our mailing list: you might need to add our new email address –info@appcios.com– to your computer’s address book, to ensure that our emails to you don’t end up in your junk folder. .

Newsletter – June 2012

We are attaching a flyer for our

LAUNCH EVENT

on 23rd June 2012…

This is your last chance to reserve a place.

Contact us at appcios@hotmail.co.uk

We are delighted that so many of you have reserved places at our Launch Event, and we are very much looking forward to meeting you. We will be sending out detailed programmes within the next fortnight, and we would be happy to hear from you if you have any questions or comments, or specific difficulties we might need to be aware of. Lunch and refreshments will be planned to include food suitable for vegetarians. We will be providing a report on the event in our next newsletter for those of you who won’t be coming on the day.

OTHER WAYS OF MEETING UP:

THE APPCIOS COMMUNITY FORUM

We are now setting up an APPCIOS COMMUNITY FORUM blogsite. This will be a blogsite open to all members, associate members, trainees and friends of APPCIOS, and we hope it will provide a meeting place and discussion forum for everyone who is interested in supporting our work. We will be opening it to everyone on our mailing list – this means you! Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sending out invitations by email, and a set of step-by-step instructions, in case you are not familiar with the process of getting on to private blogsites.

We have an increasing number of supporters living and working in many parts of the UK: this seems a helpful way of offering people the chance to begin to get to know one another, in a semi-protected space. We are very aware that it may take some time for us all to get used to online discussions: we are interested to see how it will evolve amongst a group of people far more used to face-to-face communication, and sometimes anxious about electronic communication.

Facebook Page:

We will also be setting up a Facebook Page. This will be a completely unprotected space – open to all members of the public – and we are curious to know how much difference this will make to its use. We think it is important to acquire an experiential education in these new ways of growing electronic organisations and communities, and hope that it is something we can find out about together, and discuss on the blogsite, as we progress.

Launch Event

Please reserve your place by contacting us at appcios@hotmail.co.uk

We need to get an idea of numbers so that we know

how many people to cater for.

Presentations:

We are hoping to offer a series of presentations about APPCIOS to groups and organisations that might be interested in membership or in setting up trainings. In April we talked to a small group from the Birkbeck Counselling Association Monthly Forum – an enjoyable and lively event. If you think you might know of an organisation that would be interested to host a presentation by APPCIOS representatives, please contact us at appcios@hotmail.co.uk

Weblogs:

We are experimenting with confidential weblogs, so that members can communicate with one another asynchronistically, on a series of private electronic notice-boards. We are finding this a very useful tool, and we hope to extend it to associate members, and to everyone who might be interested in finding out more about us – requesting or sharing information on trainings, projects, presentations, conferences and learning tools, and thinking together of new ways to extend our work. We’ll let you know how this develops.

Incorporation:

APPCIOS was set up as a charity, originally as an unincorporated association, but with the intention of eventually being incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. We have now applied for incorporation. It is intended that APPCIOS will be run as a membership organisation and there will be annual meetings. An initial set of regulations which will include voting rights will be published after the incorporation is finalised. We expect that these regulations will undergo revision as APPCIOS develops.

The charity has the following objects:

  1. to advance the relief of mental sickness
  2. to advance the education of psychotherapists, counsellors and other workers, and the general public, in psychodynamic practice and counselling in organisational settings
  3. to advance the education of the public in the part that psychodynamic practice and counselling in organisational settings can play in counteracting distress in individuals and their impairment in social participation in society
  4. to promote social inclusion by preventing people from becoming socially excluded by reason of mental ill health and distress by promoting psychodynamic practice and counselling in organisational settings.

Our trustees – Bob Hinshelwood, Sebastian Kraemer and Anton Obholzer – are responsible for ensuring that we carry out the charitable aims above.

Newsletter: January 2012

We are sending this newsletter to existing members, and also to everyone who has expressed an interest in APPCIOS. If you are receiving it for the first time, please look at our website, which is now live. We will be updating and refurbishing it regularly. You can find us at either appcios.com or appcios.org.uk.

Launch Day:

We are planning to hold a Launch Day for APPCIOS on Saturday June 23rd We hope to make this an event that celebrates work that has already been done, and that will attract non-members who are interested in learning more about us. However, we will also ensure that there will be time and space for a more intimate meeting of old colleagues.

Our Website:

We are now in the process of adding an interactive component: a weblog. We hope that it will in time provide a ‘community page’: a free forum for comment and discussion.

We hope that this will develop with time and grow material for a ‘living book’: an account of members’ experiences that describe the impact of our way of thinking and working.

Fliers:

We will be designing and attaching a series of fliers to the website, so that members who wish to attract interest to APPIOS can download and print them. We hope these will be useful to anyone attending conferences or making presentations about their work.

The Training Committee:

Our Training Committee, chaired by Judith Trowell, has now convened, and will be meeting regularly. We have sent all documentation to be checked with them, so that they can formally approve membership. They will be in touch with all our members to confirm that all credentials are in place.

CPD:

We will be considering the question of Continuing Professional Development on behalf of our membership: the BPC’s requirements will need to be considered in the light of our particular application and modality. Perhaps this is something to discuss on the new weblog.

External Affiliations:

We continue to negotiate external affiliations with established training schools. We have our first portfolio students, and hope that more will follow.

Contact us:

Please don’t hesitate to contact us, to think about the possibility of training with us, or of teaching or supervising, or simply to find out more about us and about what we are doing.

Newsletter: December 2011

Official Accreditation:

At their AGM, held on November 29th, the British Psychoanalytic Council made a formal decision to accept APPCIOS as a Member Institution. Our members are now eligible for inclusion in the BPC’s register as qualified psychodynamic counsellors, and for employment within the NHS.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the British Psychoanalytic Council, see www.psychoanalyticcouncil.org

Our Website:

We hope you will find our website informative and helpful. At the moment, its format is deliberately simple; we hope over time to develop it and welcome any thoughts, criticisms and suggestions for improvement. An interactive component will be added early in the New Year. Members should email or ring us to be given the password for the members section, and will then be able to post news, comments and questions.

Our trustees:

Anton Obholzer is Chair of our Board of Trustees. He has now been joined by Bob Hinshelwood, former Clinical Director of the Cassel Hospital and Professor of Psychoanalysis at the University of Essex. Anton will be recruiting further trustees in the New Year.

The Training Committee:

Our Training Committee, chaired by Judith Trowell, is gathering new members, in preparation for convening regular meetings in the New Year. The Committee will ensure that we maintain the BPC’s criteria for quality control, and we are developing protocols for membership at full and senior levels.

We will be offering student and associate membership for those who are undertaking approved modules, and who fulfill the requirements of the Training Committee.

Any member working individually with clients needs to undertake additional supervision with a BPC qualified supervisor until approved by the Training Committee. Members and senior members must also provide us with the appropriate documentation, and pay their subscriptions.

The Graduate Committee:

Our Graduate Committee, headed up by Emma Higgs and Jason Hughes, has been concentrating on tracing individuals who are already eligible to apply for full membership, and our numbers are growing. At this point, our graduate membership comprises ex-Cassel Hospital nurses and graduates of the Thornby Hall (Peper Harow/Childhood First) in-house training. We shall be including graduates from other psychodynamically orientated in-house trainings.

We also have a growing membership of psychotherapists with a special interest in consultancy and organisational dynamics.

New Training Initiatives:

We are currently running a programme of meetings to support new projects and developments suggested by our members. We are in conversation with several small organisations that are hoping to host trainings for their staff. We have a number of possible projects under consideration in residential units, special schools, with youth workers, and with others working with young people or vulnerable clients across the lifespan. We are interested in looking at residential provisions for old people, and have a project group that is meeting to develop opportunities in this area.

Emma Higgs and Jason Hughes will be convening regular meetings for the membership, and disseminating regular information on the progress of individual projects.

External Affiliations:

We are negotiating external affiliations with established training schools, and hope to be able to create, with them, a flexible programme of portfolio trainings, that will allow individuals to qualify as members by undertaking various modules over time. We will establish a list of APPCIOS-approved training therapists and supervisors who can provide therapeutic supervision on a once-weekly basis. This supervision will be available via Skype or telephone, as well as face-to-face, and may constitute an additional requirement for those who are unable to undertake personal therapy, or are not able to join a long-term experiential group.

Lobbying:

As well as promoting training, and regulating our membership, we are lobbying for a better understanding of the need for psychodynamic practice within organisations. We intend to foster affiliations with other lobbying organisations that share our aspiration to enhance the skills of professionals already working with vulnerable clients, and to create a context in which it is possible to think creatively and sensitively about their needs.

Alison Cook continues to assist us as our PR and Communications adviser.

Fundraising:

We are delighted to have acquired the help of a professional fundraiser, Sarah Sandon: she is meeting with us regularly, on a voluntary basis, to mentor us in creating a ‘fundraising toolkit’, and to guide us on how to approach potential funders. We are very grateful for her input and are working hard to produce the documents she has suggested.

Contact us:

Please don’t hesitate to contact us, to think about the possibility of training with us, or of teaching or supervising, or simply to find out more about us and about what we are doing.

Our email address is appcios@hotmail.co.uk The APPCIOS phone number is 02086908849.
